Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the NC CRNA Recognition Form
(Initial and Update)

Who should complete the form?
Beginning July 1, 2003, the North Carolina Board of Nursing initiated the process for verifying certification of nurse anesthetists practicing in North Carolina. The process affects the following groups or individuals:

  1. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists practicing in North Carolina - Click here for more detailed information regarding CRNAs.
  2. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists endorsing as registered nurses into North Carolina
  3. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists licensed by another compact state practicing in North Carolina under the "multi-state privilege to practice terms of the Nurse Licensure Compact".

What information should I know about time frames regarding CRNA recognition?

Initial recognition for CRNAs already certified will be valid for 1 or 2 years, depending on the national certification renewal date.  Recognition update is valid for a 2 year period.  Recognition update notices are sent 60 days prior to expiration of certification.  After the form has been processed, the recognition certificate will be mailed.  Please allow 4-6 weeks to process.

What happens after I submit my form?

  • You will receive an NCBON CRNA recognition certificate in the mail within 4-6 weeks.
  • If your NCBON CRNA recognition certificate has been lost or misplaced, a duplicate certificate will be issued upon receipt of a letter stating the certificate has been lost or misplaced and a $5 non-refundable administrative charge (payable to NCBON). The letter should include your name, address and social security number.

How is the update of NC CRNA recognition process handled?
All CRNAs are expected to renew their national certification biannually in July. Approximately 60 days prior to expiration of the national certification, the Board will send the CRNA a notice that the update of NC CRNA recognition form must be completed.

To update a current CRNA recognition, your certification must be within 60 days of expiring.

A non-refundable administrative charge of $25 to cover internal processing costs must be submitted with the completed update of recognition form.
