MEDICATION AIDE LAW/RULES
Medication aides were approved to practice in skilled nursing facilities (SNF, also known as long term care) in Senate Bill 622 August of 2005. The law became effective July 1, 2006, and the NC Division of Health Service Regulation (previously known as the State Division of Facility Services) rules for SNF became effective October 1, 2006.

MED AIDE FACULTY INFORMATION
Certification as an RN Med Aide Instructor
- have a current, unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina or have multistate licensure privilege
- have had at least two years of practice experience as a registered nurse that includes medication administration
- have successfully completed a 16 hour instructor training program approved by the Board and provided by a Medication Aide Master Teacher
- maintain Board of Nursing certification as a medication aide instructor (must be renewed every 2 years at the time of RN license renewal)
Process of applying for Med Aide Instructor Certification to the NCBON
- Locate a Master Teacher and complete the Application to Register for the RN Medication Aide Instructor Course – this application must be submitted to the instructor, NOT the NCBON.
- The Master Teacher will provide an Med Aide RN Instructor Certification application to be completed by the RN med aide instructor student who has passed the 16 hour training program. Application can also be downloaded here.
- The application is to be signed by the Master Teacher.
- Submit the application with $25 administrative fee to address on application.
- The NCBON will send a certification letter, which includes the Instructor Identification Number, to Med Aide RN Instructor.

RE-CERTIFICATION AS AN RN MEDICATION AIDE INSTRUCTOR
- have a current, unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina or have multistate licensure privilege
- the individual has taught at least one 24 hour medication aide training program within the preceding two years
- the individual successfully completes a review program approved by the Board
Process of applying for Med Aide Instructor Re-Certification to the NCBON
- The NCBON will send a Re-Certification application to Certified Med Aide RN Instructor.
- Complete the application. Please note, part of the re-certification requirement is to review Med Aide Program/Revisions/Updates. These can be viewed below.
- Submit the application with $25 administrative fee to address on application.
- The NCBON will send a certification letter, which includes the Instructor Identification Number, to Med Aide RN Instructor.
RE-CERTIFICATION PROCESS IF INACTIVE OR HAVE NOT TAUGHT ANY COURSE WITHIN THE TWO YEAR TIMEFRAME
If a Medication Aide RN Instructor or Master Teacher has been inactive for two years or more, or if the individual is currently certified but has not taught any course within the two year period, the RN Instructor or Master Teacher must repeat the 16-hour Medication Aide Instructor Course (taught by a currently certified Medication Aide Master Teacher) prior to re-approval as a Medication Aide Faculty.

TEACHING A MEDICATION AIDE CLASS (RN Instructor or Master Teacher)
- REQUIREMENT: The RN must apply to the Board of Nursing to be certified as a med aide instructor and receive an Instructor Identification Number PRIOR to teaching a medication aide class.
- Maximum number of students: The maximum number of medication aide students in one class is ten (10).
- Charge for Teaching a Class: For the Med Aide Master Teacher or Med Aide RN Instructor who wish to charge for the teaching of classes, it is suggested that he/she look to their area community colleges for guidance on fees. What the community college charges for a given course should give the Med Aide Master Teacher or Med Aide RN Instructor an idea of what the general market forces are within their area.

MEDICATION AIDE INFORMATION
Requirements to become a medication aide in a skilled nursing facility
Medication Aide Registry requirements with the NC Division of Health Service Regulation are:
- have a high school diploma or GED;
- successful completion of a 24 hour medication aide training program approved by the Board of Nursing;
- successful completion of a state-approved competency evaluation program; and
- listing on the NC Division of Health Service Regulation Medication Aide Registry.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The medication aide who wishes to function in a skilled nursing facility must be listed as a Medication Aide and a Nurse Aide I with the NC Division of Health Service Regulation prior to functioning as a medication aide in such a facility.
