Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist Recognition

This recognition process has two components:

Inactive nurse anesthetist status (no charge)

You may request inactive status provided:

  • You plan to discontinue the practice of nurse anesthesia in NC
  • Your nurse anesthetist certification is current and within 60 days of expiring

Note: This will not inactivate your NC RN license.

Requirements for Recognition:

  • Current permanent or temporary NC RN license or current RN compact license with multi-state privilege to practice (compact license information must first be submitted on the “Compact State Application” located in the Nurse Gateway)
  • Current NBCRNA certification

Submission of your application must not be construed as automatic CRNA recognition for practice as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. The NC Board of Nursing must verify that you have met all conditions before approval can be granted.

The NC Board of Nursing’s electronic database serves as the primary source of licensure information for nurses (including APRN) and NA IIs in North Carolina. Electronic verification of licensure status can be accessed on the License Verification page

Process for initial recognition:

Individuals who must verify and complete initial recognition are:

  1. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists practicing in North Carolina
  2. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists endorsing as registered nurses into North Carolina
  3. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists licensed by another compact state practicing in North Carolina under the "multi-state privilege to practice terms of the Nurse Licensure Compact"

Process for update of NC CRNA recognition:

All CRNAs are expected to recertify their NBCRNA national certification on a cycle determined by NBCRNA. Approximately 60 days prior to expiration of the national certification, the NC Board will send the CRNA a notice to also update their NC CRNA recognition and to provide their current national certification number and new expiration date to the Board of Nursing.

A non-refundable administrative charge of $25.00 to cover internal processing costs must be submitted with the completed CRNA recognition update.
