Fees for application for Licensure by Exam:

Examination fee 1st time tester: $75.00

Re-examination fee: $75.00


Valid forms of payment:

  • Credit or debit card; MasterCard or Visa only 
  • Third party payments require a certified check or money order
  • Electronic Check

After successful completion (including approval of payment), your confirmation number will be shown. You will then have the option to print the confirmation for your records. This will also serve as your official payment receipt.

  • Submittal of the NCBON ID Document 
  • Electronic School Verification or Official Transcript Copies 
  • Registration & payment of fees to Pearson Vue

A Criminal Background Check is required

All applicants must complete a criminal background check prior to the issuance of a license.

North Carolina Residents Only:

If you reside in North Carolina, use LiveScan to obtain and transmit your digital fingerprints electronically to the SBI/FBI. LiveScan is only available to applicants living in North Carolina. To access instructions and required forms for LiveScan click here.

Out-of-State Residents:

If you reside in another state or country, North Carolina Board of Nursing issued fingerprint cards and instructions will be mailed directly to you following submission of your application for licensure. Fingerprinting must be performed by trained law enforcement personnel. Contact your local sheriff or police office for assistance and additional details.

Nurse Licensure Compact:

An active NC License is not issued when another Compact State is claimed as the Primary State of Residence on this application. For additional information see Nurse Licensure Compact Information.

The NC Board of Nursing’s electronic database serves as the primary source of licensure information for nurses (including APRN) and NA IIs in North Carolina. Electronic verification of licensure status can be accessed online on the License Verification page.

Submission Information

To submit an application for examination, please access the Examination Application located under 'Licenses/Certificates' once you're logged in to your Nurse Gateway profile.

Submitting this on-line exam application does not guarantee approval for taking NCLEX. You must meet all eligibility requirements as outlined in the application, and the North Carolina Board of Nursing must declare you eligible to test with the testing service (Pearson VUE).

  • Pop-up blockers disabled or temporarily allow pop ups for this application 
  • Have Javascript enabled 
  • Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher with compatibility mode activated
  • Application will time-out after 20 minutes of inactivity
