Nursing Licensure Resources for New Graduates

    Graduates of Out-Of-State Programs
    Nurse Gateway Registration
    • To access the Nurse Gateway, you must register. You will need to create a Username and Password to access the examination application.
    • Steps for registering on the Nurse Gateway
    Complete Online Application
    • Apply for licensure with the North Carolina Board of Nursing 4-6 weeks prior to program completion.
    • Print and mail identification document immediately following the completion of the examination application. Allow 5 business days for processing.
    Official Transcript
    • Out-of-state graduates are required to provide an official transcript, the transcript must include your legal name (first & last), degree awarded and date of completion or conferral.
    • Mail official transcript directly from your educational institution to: NCBON, Exam Department, PO Box 2506, Raleigh, NC 27602-2506
    • Electronic transcripts are accepted from the following vendors: eScrip, Parchment and National Student Clearinghouse. Transcripts can be sent electronically to: transcripts@ncbon.com.
    • No other forms or documents are required from the school.
    Pearson VUE
    • Register and pay at Pearson VUE Testing Centers at least two weeks prior to program completion.
    Receive eligibility from the North Carolina Board of Nursing
    • Once the application is submitted, identification document is mailed in, program is verified and Pearson VUE registration are complete then allow 5 business days to receive Authorization to Test (ATT) via e-mail.

    Please be advised: The name on your application and registration with Pearson VUE should match your driver’s license. Please provide Pearson Vue with your Social Security number to avoid delays in processing.

    Check Application Status

    To check the status of your application, login to your Nurse Gateway and then click on the blue tile which indicates your pending application under the ‘Licenses/Approval to Practice/Certifications’ tab. Click on the 'Application Status' tab.

    Re-print Identification Document

    You can reprint your Exam application and identification document by completing the steps below:

    • Access your Nurse Gateway
    • Click on the blue tile labeled 'RN/LPN NCLEX CANDIDATE'
    • Click on the tab that says 'Exam Status' and then click on 'View/Reprint Application'

    If for any reason, the steps above do not work, please click on the link below to complete the form.

    Identification Document

    ** The Criminal Background Check is required for licensure only, it does not affect an applicant’s ability to test. To avoid delays in the issuance of a license, we recommend completing this prior to testing.
