Renewal Requirements (RN/LPN):

You will need the following to apply:

Important Notice for Advanced Practice Nurses

Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives

If you are renewing your RN license, the RN license does not allow you to practice as a nurse practitioner or certified nurse-midwife. You must renew or reinstate the advanced practice approval separately from the RN licensure. You can find these applications on our home page under "Online Services".

CRNA

If you are renewing your RN license, the RN license does not allow you to practice as a CRNA. You must verify your certification status with the NC Board of Nursing initially, and thereafter on a periodic basis concurrent with the CCNA renewal cycle. All nurse anesthetists are expected to renew their national certification biennially in July. Approximately 60 days prior to the expiration of the national certification, the Board of Nursing will mail you a notice to update your NC CRNA recognition and to provide your current national certification number and expiration date to the Board of Nursing.

Submission Information

To submit an application for renewal, login to your Nurse Gateway and then click on the blue tile that says 'EXPIRING SOON' which indicates your license under the 'Licenses/Approval to Practice/Certifications' tab. Click on 'Renewal/Reinstatement' to renew your license.

Submission of your online application should not be construed as automatic renewal of your license. The North Carolina Board of Nursing must verify that you have met all the conditions for renewal before your license is renewed.

If all requirements have been met, your online renewal application will be processed within 3 business days. If a criminal background check or additional documents are required, your online renewal/reinstatement application will be processed within 6 - 8 weeks.

The NC Board of Nursing’s electronic database serves as the primary source of licensure information for nurses (including APRN) and NA IIs in North Carolina. Electronic verification of licensure status can be accessed on the Verify License page.
