Current Guidance for Public Safety and Compliance

Nurse Practitioner (NP) practice is jointly regulated through the NP Joint Subcommittee of the NC Board of Nursing (NCBON) and the NC Medical Board (NCMB). The purpose of regulatory law and rule is public protection through professional regulation. This session will address Nurse Practitioner regulation; current guidance for public safety and compliance.

This session is approved for 4 contact hours (3.0 CH Discipline Specific/1.0 CH Pharmacology Controlled Substance Prescribing). Participants must complete the entire session, including the required readings, to be eligible for the nursing contact hours.

NC Board of Nursing is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

By the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the mission of the NCBON
  • Apply regulatory knowledge in selected practice scenarios
  • Utilize regulation to support evidence-based controlled substance prescribing.

Chapter 1

  • Articulate the mission of the NCBON
  • Recognize NP resources available on the NC Board of Nursing Website

Chapter 2

  • Identify the recognized APRN Roles
  • Differentiate Registration & Approval to Practice
  • Articulate the NP Scope of Practice
  • Apply NP rules to selected case scenarios

Chapter 3

  • Recognize NP Compliance Measures
  • Understand incidence of disciplinary actions on APRN license

Chapter 4

  • Understand the rules governing NP Practice including the consumer protection focus of the rule change 21 NCAC 36 .0815 Reporting Criteria
  • Understand the state Policy for the Use of Opiates for the Treatment of Pain
