This application is for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN)* who hold a multi-state Registered Nurse license issued by another Compact State. In order to apply for and/or maintain Advanced Practice approval or recognition in North Carolina, you must hold a current permanent Registered Nurse license, valid for practice in North Carolina. If you hold a multi-state Registered Nurse license issued by another Compact State, you must first submit that licensure information, via the Compact State application, before applying for Advanced Practice approval/recognition. You can also use this application to update your compact Registered Nurse information each time you renew the license with your State Board.
Once an unrestricted multi-state Registered Nurse license has been verified by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse applications will become available within your Nurse Gateway portal.
If North Carolina is (or will become) your primary state of residence, you must also apply for a North Carolina Registered Nurse license.
*"Advanced Practice Registered Nurse" (APRN) is an umbrella title for Registered Nurses who are Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) or Nurse Practitioners (NP).
