The North Carolina Board of Nursing was founded in 1903, making it the first Board of Nursing in the nation. From its humble beginnings, the North Carolina Board of Nursing has grown to license more than 160,000 Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses statewide.
North Carolina also is the only state in the nation that elects the majority of nurses to its Board. Eleven of the fourteen members are elected by nurses holding valid North Carolina nursing licenses. Each year the Board conducts an election to fill the open seats. Voting takes place from July 1st to August 15th.
