Medication Aides were approved to practice in skilled nursing facilities (such as nursing homes) in Senate Bill 622 August of 2005. The law became effective July 1, 2006, and the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation (previously known as the State Division of Facility Services) rules for SNF became effective October 1, 2006.

Requirements to become a Medication Aide in a Skilled Nursing Facility
Medication Aide Registry requirements with the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation include:
- Have a High School Diploma or GED;
- Successful completion of a 24-hour Medication Aide training program approved by the Board of Nursing;
- Successful completion of a state-approved competency evaluation program; and
- Listing on the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation Medication Aide Registry
- NOTE: A medication aide must also be listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) on the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation NA I Registry.
