RN Instructor Certification

The Registered Nurse must apply to the Board of Nursing to be certified as a Medication Aide Instructor and receive an Instructor Approval Number PRIOR to teaching a Medication Aide class. 

1. Have a current, unencumbered license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina  

2. Have had at least two (2) years of practice experience as a Registered Nurse that includes medication administration 

3. Have successfully completed an instructor training program approved by the Board  

4. Maintain Board of Nursing certification as a Medication Aide Instructor (must be renewed every two (2) years from approval date) 

Applying for Medication Aide Instructor Initial Certification 

1. Completion of a Medication Aide RN Instructor Course taught by a Board-approved Medication Aide Master Teacher**  

2. Once a Medication Aide RN Instructor Course has been completed, the RN Instructor can login to their Nurse Portal account, download and submit an “Initial Form for Medication Aide RN Instructor Certification.” This form requires verification and signature of completion by the Master Teacher. Once completed, upload the form and complete the application process through the Nurse Portal.  

3. Once approved, the RN Instructor will receive a confirmation email from the NCBON with their Medication Aide RN Instructor approval number.
