Compact State Application
This application is for Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN)*. To apply for and/or maintain Advanced Practice approval or recognition in North Carolina, you must hold a current permanent Registered Nurse license, valid for practice in North Carolina. If you do not hold a North Carolina Registered Nurse license but hold a multi-state Registered Nurse license issued by another compact state, you must first submit that licensure information via the Compact State application. Once an unrestricted multi-state Registered Nurse license has been verified by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse applications will become available within your Nurse Gateway portal.
*"Advanced Practice Registered Nurse" (APRN) is an umbrella title for Registered Nurses who are Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA), Certified Nurse Midwives (CNM), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) or Nurse Practitioners (NP).
If North Carolina is (or will become) your primary state of residence, you must also apply for a North Carolina Registered Nurse license per 21 NCAC 36 .0702 .
