Medication Aides were approved to practice in skilled nursing facilities (SNF, also known as Long-term Care) in Senate Bill 622 August of 2005. The law became effective July 1, 2006, and the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation (previously known as the State Division of Facility Services) rules for SNF became effective October 1, 2006.

Requirements to become a Medication Aide in a Skilled Nursing Facility

Medication Aide Registry requirements with the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation include:

• Have a High School Diploma or GED;
• Successful completion of a 24 hour Medication Aide training program approved by the Board of Nursing;
• Successful completion of a state-approved competency evaluation program; and
• Listing on the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation Medication Aide Registry

The Medication Aide who wishes to function in a skilled nursing facility must be listed as a Medication Aide and a Nurse Aide I with the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation prior to functioning as a Medication Aide in such a facility.
